Semmelweis University, Faculty of Medicine

 

Founded in 1769, the world renowned Semmelweis University is the oldest Medical School in Hungary. The Faculty became an an independent Medical School after World War II and had developed into a Universiy that teaches Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Health Sciences, etc. It combines innovation and time tested methods in the areas of education, research, and health care and is widely recognised as one of Europe’s leading centres of Medicine and Health Sciences.

 

Semmelweis University is the largest independent health care provider in Hungary, covering at least six% of the country’s health care needs. It is also one of the most prestigious research institutions in the country with more than 1300 of its staff actively involved in R&D activities.

English language Programs offered by the Faculty of Medicine.

 

General Medicine: This program is of 12 semesters spread over a period of 6 years. During

the first 2 years the students are taught the foundation of basic medical knowledge. From

the third year theoretical training is extended with clinical practice, which takes place in

clinical departments and teaching hospitals. At the end of 6 years, after passing the State

Board Examination, the student is granted the title ‘Doctor of Medicine’.

 

Fees: 17,900 USD/year. 

 

Dentistry: The Dentistry Program is of 5 years divided into 10 semesters. During the first

3 years students are taught basic sciences and the last 2 years serve the intensive clinical

study of various disciplines of dentistry. After successful completion of the program, students

are awarded the title ‘Doctor of Dentistry’.

 

Fees: 17,900 USD/year.

 

Pharmacy: The Pharmacy program is also of 5 years divided into 10 semesters. During the second 
part the students participate in special pharmaceutical education at the university departments,
teaching pharmacies, institutes, laboratories, and pharmaceutical works. Successful students are
awarded the title ‘Doctor of Pharmacy. 

 

Fees: 12,000 USD/year.

 

Application Requirements: Applicant should have completed high school or should complete high school in the year they are applying.

1. Please download and print the application form from the end of this page. Fill the application form and sign it and sign one photo and clip it to the application form, do not glue. 

2. Attach the following to the application form.

a. Copy of Secondary School Leaving Certificate (in English or with an

authorized translation) and all official transcripts from your secondary school. In case you are still in school and expect your results after the admission attach the attested copies of the certificates of the past two years. You will not be able to commence your studies unless you have your final transcripts and Secondary School leaving Certificate. 

b. Letter of recommendation.

c. Curriculum Vitae in English (attach separate page).

d. Motivation letter.

e. Medical report (including negative HIV test and Hepatitis B vaccination,

certification of not having chronic infectious disease and dyslexia).

f. Two passport size photos (signed on the back).

g. Copy of passport with your personal data.

Semmelweis University Rankings:

 

Semmelweis University is well known and respected in global Medical circles. it is placed high on all the ranking sites. As different sites use different criteria these rankings may differ a little.

 

Accreditation:

 

Semmelweis University is a State University, which functions under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. It is listed in the WHO’s directory of Medical Schools.

The faculties of the University were reaccredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Board in 2006. The decision of the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation of the USA declares: The standards and processes used by the Hungarian Accreditation Council to accredit medical schools in Hungary are comparable to those used to accredit medical schools in the United States.

 

International Recognition of Degrees:

 

European Union: In those professions where the conditions of education in Hungary are identical with those in the European Union, and these have already been recognized (medical and dental doctors, pharmacists etc.), the member states of the European Union are obliged to accept the diplomas issued in Hungary, independent of the language of tuition.

 

USA: Semmelweis graduates (as foreign graduates) have the right to pass the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE), after which they are eligible for residency.

 

Canada: Semmelweis graduates are eligible to pass the Medical Council of Canada Evaluation Examination (MCCEE) and the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) before applying for residencies.

 

India: Doctor of Dentistry degree of Semmelweis University is equivalent to B.D.S. degree in India.
